Hailed as a “Rock Star of the Cello” and noted for his “spirited and fiery performances,” Rafael Hoekman’s varied career as a soloist, teacher, chamber musician and orchestral cellist has taken him on a journey across Canada.

He has been Principal Cellist with the Edmonton Symphony since 2015, and has also held positions with the Calgary Phil, and the Winnipeg Symphony. He was a prize winner in many competitions including the Orford International, the CMC Stepping Stones, and the Banff International String Quartet Competition as a member of the Tokai Quartet. Rafael has appeared as soloist with many Canadian orchestras including the Edmonton Symphony, Calgary Phil and the Quebec Symphony. He has also performed alongside many of the greatest Canadian musicians including the St. Lawrence String Quartet, and James Ehnes.

Rafael is a dedicated teacher and is on faculty at the University of Alberta. He is very excited to perform in Calgary once again in the ChamberFestWest!
